Glossary of the transfer market
Everyday terms of the football transfer market, from amortisation to training compensation, and the clubs that appear most often among the largest deals.
Terms
Core definitions
- Amortisation
- The accounting practice of spreading a transfer fee across the length of a player's contract, so a £50m fee on a five-year deal appears as £10m a year in the club's accounts.
- Buy-back clause
- A term in a sale agreement giving the selling club the right to re-sign the player for a pre-agreed fee within a set period.
- Sell-on clause
- A term entitling the selling club to a percentage of any future transfer fee when the player is sold again.
- Release clause
- A fixed sum written into a contract that, if met, obliges the club to allow the player to leave.
- Bosman transfer
- A free transfer at the end of a contract, named after the 1995 European Court of Justice ruling in the Jean-Marc Bosman case.
- Free agent
- A player without a contract at a club, who can be registered outside a transfer window.
- Pre-contract agreement
- A binding agreement signed up to six months before a contract expires, allowing a player to join a new club for free at the end of it.
- Undisclosed fee
- A transfer where the clubs decline to publish the fee; the amount is not formally confirmed.
- Add-ons
- Contingent payments in a transfer, triggered by appearances, goals, trophies or qualification.
- Loan with obligation to buy
- A temporary move that becomes permanent automatically once defined conditions are met.
- Training compensation
- A payment owed to clubs that trained a player between the ages of 12 and 21 when that player signs a first professional contract or moves internationally.
- Solidarity contribution
- A payment of 5% of a transfer fee, distributed among the clubs that trained a player between the ages of 12 and 23.
